November 12th Meeting
The Called And Ready Writers Present...
FALL LITERARY AND
PERFORMANCE SYMPOSIUM SESSION FOR POETS, PLAYWRIGHTS AND
SONGWRITERS
Featuring Special
Guest:
MRS. MARCIA JONES-WASHINGTON
After years of
writing poetry, Marcia began “dabbling” at songwriting while in high
school. Upon graduation, however, Marcia found herself putting aside
her typewriter to spend more time “experiencing life.” It has been in
recent years that she has transformed some of those life experiences
into poetry and song once again. Writing has even served as a
therapeutic and healing tool for losses, which she has experienced and
feels she has only overcome “by the grace of God.”

A native of
Pittsburgh, Marcia has performed her poetry at many different venues
such as: coffee houses, bookstores, family reunions, community events,
and at one of Pittsburgh’s unique “FluX” art events.
Marcia has made it a
point to remember the elderly at Christmas time, recruiting friends,
relatives, and co-workers to join her in visiting local nursing homes
and senior facilities to have Christmas carol “sing-alongs” with their
residents.
Television
appearances have included Cornerstone Television’s “A Nichol’s Worth,”
to discuss her first poetry collection titled, “The Words Just Jumped
Right Out!” She has also had the opportunity to perform her original
novelty song, “Gotta Have My Coffee,” with other members of the
Pittsburgh Songwriter’s Association on Pittsburgh’s community cable
television station, PC-TV 21.
Marcia’s most recent
endeavor has been to head up a small community performance group called,
the Under Authority Theatre Group. This is a small group of women who
share a common vision, which is to present the lives of history making
African American Women to a public who has little or no awareness of
them. Their productions will tell the story of four women at a time and
are, therefore, called “4 Real Women.” Their first season has found
them performing at Carlow University’s Heyl
Auditorium, at the
P.O.W.E.R. House, (a facility for women in recovery from drugs and
alcohol)) and on Cornerstone Television’s “Focus 4” program.
Marcia’s personal
mission is to “inspire through words” – whether they are written, spoken
or sung. |
